COMPUTER AND INTERNET ACCESS

Members and visitors are welcome to access the Internet at the library.

UPDATE to IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR USERS OF OUR PUBLIC INTERNET COMPUTERS:
You NOW need your library card number to log on. This applies to adults, teens and children. Please ensure you and any family members using the Internet at the library have a valid library card. Visit us at the main desk to get your library card today! Non-residents will be granted time on the computers by presenting valid photo ID.

GENERAL INFORMATION

We have six Public Internet Stations for Adults (16 years old and up), two Stations for Teens (13-15 years old) and two filtered Stations for Children (12 and under). You NOW need your library card number to log on.

You are welcome use your personal laptop/notebook computer. Wireless access to the Internet is available within the library. You may also connect to one of the Internet cable outlets located in the floor.

Members of the library may use their library card to sign out a library-owned laptop or notebook computer for In-Library use only. These items are not permitted to leave the library.

The speed of the Internet and the computers connected to it are beyond the control of library staff. Speed may be affected by the number of people using this free service as well as the types of activities in which users are engaged.

All information downloaded or saved on library computers will be deleted upon restarting, logging off, or allowing your session to time out. (This does not apply to your personally-owned laptop). Losing your data will be prevented by saving your work on an external memory stick or emailing it to yourself.

Important notes:

You NOW need your library card number to log on

  • SYSTEM: It is Linux based NOT Windows.
  • DOCUMENTS: Word processing, spread sheets, and presentation software are accessed through Internet-based Open Office. Most Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) should open on the system. However, if your document has been saved in the newest version of Microsoft Office it may not be recognized by Open Office.
  • SOUND: If you are using headphones during your session, you must plug them in BEFORE you log in.
  • PRINTING: If you need to print from the BODY of an email please check with staff to find out the best way to do this. From experience, the most reliable way is to copy and paste the content into an Open Office Word Document. Choosing other methods results in wasted paper and unwelcome charges for unusable printed documents.
  • PROBLEMS: Please let staff know if something you are trying to do does not work. We are not tech specialists but we can contact Support to see if the problem can be corrected by the next time you visit. We will require very specific information about the program or website in question so we can recreate, properly report and resolve the issue.

ACCESS AND USE GUIDELINES

1. Not all Internet sources provide accurate, complete, age appropriate or current information. It is the user's responsibility to question the validity of any information.

2. Parents or guardians are responsible for monitoring their children's Internet activity and choice of workstation. Filtering software does not replace the need for parental guidance.

3. Be aware that the workstations are in public areas shared by people of all ages and sensibilities. Although the library has taken measures to increase privacy, complete privacy cannot be guaranteed. Each user is ultimately responsible for the selection of sites and should be aware that other library users may be involuntarily exposed to what is displayed.

4. Respect the privacy of others using public access workstations.

5. Use is limited to one (1) hour if others are waiting to use an Internet workstation. Users will sign in at the front desk prior to use.

6. Bookings may be made in person or over the phone. Reserved Internet stations will be held for no more than five minutes. Users can make one (1) advance registration per day.

7. Where permitted by copyright, users may print their information at the posted rate.
